Question about soundfont on playback.

• Oct 13, 2018 - 21:02

For a score of mine I need a muted trombone (straight mute) which is not available. I will complete the score with the certain passages notated for mute.
When I buy fonts will I be able to insert the new font (with mute)to replace the older one in the score for playback? I am guessing there will be be two sound fonts needed, one for trombone and one for muted trombone. Is that how it works?

Comments

The default sound font has a sound for both a trumpet and a muted trumpet. There are sound fonts that contain a muted and open trombone also. The trick will be to add a channel for the muted trombone. I currently use a C trumpet, and change the range, clef and sounds in the mixer to match my trombone. I use the Aegean symphonic sound font. It comes with an instruments.xml file you can use if you want to.

Nice of you.
Previously I had searched all instruments and found no mute. I just now loaded the C trumpet on a new page and noticed an additional entry in the mixer for a muted trumpet. I guess "the trick" is to add a channel. I know that the #60 muted trpt will work in the lower range for a temp fix. It worked on an analog recording I made in the 90s when I wrote the piece.

I wouldn't mind trying your Aegean font, having no idea how to borrow a font.

How?

thanks, from planet Newbie.

The Aegean font is not mine, it was developed by another MuseScore user who sometimes posts to these forums. The link I posted has a not very obvious link after the list of features following the word Download: to get the sound font. See here for info on using a soundfont.

goooood mornin'

I WAS supposed to d/l the entire symphonic file from google drive, right?
I tried to "open with" MuseScore

Cannot read file C:/Users/User/Downloads/ASO-sf-2_2.7z:
unknown type

It d/l into "downloads", not "program files"
Am I suppose to move it?
Or do I need to get WinZip or something?

Thank you, kuwitt

7-zip in program files

Musescore General sf.3 in Fluid of Synthesizer

ASO-sf-2-2.7z in Soundfont folder. When ever I click on it, it asks if I want to unzip again.

when I click on Aegean Sym a file of 360 M bytes , a green band fills in something called background.

I have no idea where the fonts are. there is something about "manually extracting", but that pertains to SFZ...these are sf3, yes?
This is totally new to me and I do not want to click on the wrong item or screw up settings, etc. The instructions assume a prior knowledge of these operations.

ASO is an sf2 sound font. You only need to put the sound font in your sound fonts folder. You can find its location under Edit->Preferences->General. If the file has a .7z extension it is a zipped file inside of a zipped file, so you will have to unzip the second one as well.

Hi

I ran into difficulty (reply to huwitt) due to my lack of experience with all this.

I thought a sound "font" (singular) was one instrument, like "muted trombone" or bassoon, etc. The "font" is for the entire orchestra. Does this mean all the other instruments will be replaced? I thought I was going to be adding just a muted tbone to my list. Or could I pick and choose?
Sorry about this all, but I AM new to all this.

The page you used for a download has a table with all of the instruments. It obviously does not have all 127 sounds as defined in the sound font standard. Like a printed font, that has symbols for all letters and many symbols, a sound font has sounds for a group of the instruments. I have seen sound fonts that have only a single instrument.

In reply to by mike320

I see. I may have confused font with "sample".
Also, I was not clear. My question is: If I use the ASO font, does that mean that the other 5 instruments will change over as well? (I've never heard a demo of an individual instrument and I do not like the sound of the ASO orchestra. I'd like to buy Vienna Symphonic at a later date.)
So far, the default instruments have been good enough. I just need a mute for the tbone but I don't want to go nuts or drive helpful folks like you crazy trying to help me:

The ASO-sf-2-2.7z is sitting in the soundfont folder. Everytime I double click it, it wants to be unzipped. I've done that 3 times. When I go to Edit->Preferences->General. it shows NOTHING in my soundfont folder when in fact there are the 4 ASO entries. Nothing in the synthesizer either. There is nothing to ADD. (cue Twilight Zone theme)
I've read everything over and watched videos. If it's in the folder, I must be close. Hate to quit now.

A file with a .7z extension is a zipped file. It was zipped using 7 - zip which can be downloaded here.

The only file that needs to be in the soundfonts directory is the one with a .sf2 extension, the rest won't matter to MuseScore. Once the sf2 file is in the directory, you will be able to see the soundfont when you open the synthesizer (View->Synthesizer) and click the Add button.

I realize you are not particularly intereted in the AOS, but this procedure will help you when you find a soundfont you do want. I use the AOS for the muted brass and variations on the strings that are not otherwise available.

>>> but this procedure will help you when you find a soundfont you do want.

I agree. That's why I am proceeding.

I now for the fourth (4th) time unzipped it with 7-zip which I have had and directed it to soundfonts folder where it sits like a fossil along with a WPD doc and an xml file.
There is nothing in synthesizer but MuseScore-general.sf3. Copy and paste the ASO-sf2-2.7z into synthesizer won't work. It ADDS nothing.
Is the file supposed to be ASO-sf2-s.7z ? Or another extension? Should I delete, uninstall and start over?

In reply to by kuwitt

Greetings, kuwitt, and thanks.
Yes I clicked ADD. Often. The file in the soundfont folder reads ASO-sf-2-2.7z. It is a TZ file 266MB. THAT is the size it should be, no?

There was a 7-zip FOLDER which included several similar looking files, which I remember were .dll or sfX files. I don't know one from another. Somehow the 7-zip folder ended up in soundfonts, too. You see, I do not know what I am looking for, what I am unzipping, etc. So everything ended up in the same place. I did not see the file Mike wrote: ASO-v2_2.sf2.

I want to delete all and start over. The question is now: what do I do with all the other files that come in the 7 Zip folder, and where to put 7 zip folder (program files? soundfonts?documents?) The instructions assume familiarity with all this file/extension business.

Not sure what your'e missing. Yes, 266 MB is the right size for the compressed file with the extension 7z. It contains the sound font, but you have to extract it before using it (then the file size is 360 MB).

So from scratch:
- download the 7z file (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5gPxvwx-I4Kemw3dlVwbTRZaGc)
- open the the 7z file with the application 7zip, you should see these files:
aegan.png
- select the file AeganSymphonicOrchestra-v2_2.sf2 and and extract (all inside the application 7zip) this file to the correct Soundfonts folder of musescore (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/soundfonts-and-sfz-files#install)
- Open in MuseScore the synthesizer window and add inside the fluid tab the sound font.

Concerning the other files, containing the 7z file (see picture above): it's you decision, it's not necessary for loading the sound font first of all. For example the aso-instruments.xml you can extract to the same or better another folder and using it with MuseScore (https://musescore.org/en/node/15803#Change-the-instrument-list). But this is another topic.

In reply to by kuwitt

THE EAGLE HAS LANDED.

In previous attempts I kept "installing" or "opening" the file, not "extracting" because the instructions specifically said to "extract" SFZ files. I thought it meant SFZ AS OPPOSED TO SF2!

I finally clicked on "extract here".

The bloody file is now in the synthesizer. I am content.

Much thanks, also for the "how to edit or create" info which I will review.
