Stems of cross-staffed notes not aligning in some cases

• Dec 8, 2018 - 18:27

I'm working on a piano score of a four-part chorale (see attachment). I have two voices on the treble staff, and two voices on the bass staff. Sometimes, such as is the case in the first three measures of the piece, I want the first voice of the bass staff to appear on the treble staff, so I have cross-staffed those notes. The cross-staffed notes have the same duration as the note above it on the treble staff, so MuseScore automatically lines up the stems nicely, looking like a two-note chord. However, this is not the case for the first note(s) of the first measure.

The first note of the second (now lone) voice on the bass staff is a whole note; I noticed that if I change that note to two half notes, then MuseScore does automatically line up nicely the stems of the notes now in the treble clef (as it does for all other cross-staffed notes of the same duration as the note above it).

Is this a bug? Is this intentional behavior? Regardless, is there a way for me to force the stems of those first notes on the treble clef to line up nicely? Thanks for the help.

I tried several modifications and found out that the aligning works well when I shift the bass note from second to third voice (Edit > Voices). Therefore I tried to change the direction of the not existing stem of the bassnote in the inspector (Stem direction: Up) - et voilá the aligning is correct, too.

Another thing that makes them look right is if you exchange voices 1 and 2 in the fiest 2 measures so the tie is included. Version 3 looks and acts exactly like version 2.3.2. I'll enter a bug report.

It seems like a bug to me since there is no collision being avoided. I'm not sure what happens in version 3, I haven't tested it as I type this. Since no more bugs will be fixed in version 2, what happens in version 3 is very important.

In your score you can select the note that is not properly lining up and in the inspector (F8) go to the chord section and adjust the horizontal position of the note.

I did try nudging the note to the right, and got it to mostly line up; I was hoping for an "automatic" solution (like the ones mentioned above). I also ran into a bit of trouble with the nudging of the note head persisting but the nudging of the stem not persisting (I saw a bug report about that from a while ago, too).
