Changing length of lines
I am a complete novice just starting to feel my way through Musescore.
At first I entered notes with the measure and bar lengths that were provided initially,
Then I worked out that I could change the lengths, and number of bars in a line by highlighting the barline and clicking return. But how do Ido the revererse? That is, join a couple of bars onto the previous line? I can't figure it out.
Thanks

select the system break (that light grey/blue icon at the top right of the measure) and delete it. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/breaks-and-spacers

Ah, many thanks. Hidden in plain sight.

The return key is a toggle for the system break.

Oh, does that mean there is a better way to adjust the number of bars in a line?

That means that the return key is a toggle for having or not having a system break for the particular measure it gets applied to, no more, no less.
There's also a tool to set system breaks at regular intervals. All described in the handbook page linked to above

In the tools menu, add/remove system breaks sets a system break every x measures and removes all other system breaks.
Two items are helpful to me in layout:
1) Format - Page Settings. The Staff Space can be set up or down - it changes the size of everything in the score, and thereby changes number of measures in a line (and number of pages).
2) Format - Style - Measure. There are a lot of things to play with here, I mostly adjust "Note left margin", "Note to barline distance", and especially "Minimum note distance". Increasing the last number often allows you to move a measure to the next line.
These are best considered after all your notes are in place.
