Select the duration of a quarter (via toolbar or shortcut "5") note and press ctrl+3 (or choose via menu notes->tuplets->triplet), see:

If you mean 3 1/4 notes, you need to make it out of a 1/2 note. Press 6 then ctrl-3 for the 3 1/4 notes.

The key is to first choose a duration for the whole triplet (or tuplet) group.

Yep - first choosing the duration is the key ~ then it "works" easy as pie! NOW I've got it! Thank you.

For more info see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tuplets. This page should apply equally to versions 2 and 3 except the location of the menu which is under Notes in version 2. Tuplet is the generic term for all duplets, triplets and so forth.
First, select the Half Note and place your desired note. Then, press Ctrl+3 and place the other two notes of your triplet
