[macOS] Speakers crackle loudly when other apps play audio
Hello all,
Recently musescore released an update that fixed audio issues with Musescore 3 on Mac OS. Most of the issues are fixed except for one - seemingly at random, playing audio in YouTube, Music (or for me Roon) causes the speakers to crackle loudly whenever the audio is played with musescore open in the background. The only solution is to restart Musescore. Sometimes the crackling can get so bad and loud I'm afraid it'll damage the speakers permanently. Obviously, this isn't totally on Musescore as the T2 is still unstable but it's the only App this happens in so I don't know what else it could be. I haven't yet figured out a reliable way to reproduce it. It seems to happen when MuseScore is open for a longer session and I play audio on an unrelated app. Let me know if anyone else is experiencing this.

For me, some crackling happens whenever I open musescore while playing some other audio. The crackling isn't very loud though.
Interestingly, the crackling happens basically consistently with youtube, Xplayer, VLC and Rhythmbox, but does not appear to happen at all with spotify.
I have musescore 3.2.3 on Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon with Xplayer 2.0.2, VLC media player 3.0.8, Rhythmbox 3.4.2 and spotify 1:1.1.10.546. The issue has been around for a while, probably going back to musescore 2.0.1 or similar, back when I started to use musescore.

This issue is very annoying. If it’s not fixed I’ll have to switch to Finale full time (right now I’m using it for big band charts and muse score for small ensemble charts).
Can anyone affected by this please provide the
a) MuseScore version
b) macOS version and
c) hardware model description from About This Mac
so that someone who is not aware if they are affected by this can try and reproduce.

The settings of the audio driver may be conflicting with other software.
If the audio driver settings (in basic system settings) can be set to 16bit 44.1kHz, it is necessary to test if this problem persists.
Could possibly be related to autosave. See if the problem goes away if you always are careful to save your work before switching to another app.

It happens before any work is even open. I dont think thats it.

I have it set on 96khz. That being said, none of my apps do this except for musescore.

Because Musescore's Fluid synthesizer uses 44.1kHz.

Okay, I'll put the audio midi format on 44khz whenever I use Musescore on internal audio and report back.
Also observing loud crackling on MuseScore 2.0.3 that affects all other sounds on macOS Catalina version 10.16.6
Version 2.0.3 isn't supported any more. If you really want version 2 still, I suggest you upgrade to 2.3.2 (the last 2.x version) but 3.5 is so much better once you learn how to use it.
