elisions
I've read the stuff on elisions or whatever you want to call them. The F2 on my keyboard does not give me any special characters, and I don't have that keyboard icon which looks like an a. I don't know why not. Nor can I find any on MuseScore anywhere - why is it not listed in Palettes. I don't know what to do.

Beside the point, and I know I'm four years late here, but how many of us are spending lifetimes inputting the entire RCM voice catalogue into MuseScore????? We should all team up, seriously.
F2 only brings up the Special Characters palette while you are actually editing text - e.g., after you've double-clicked it and the cursor appears. Same for the icon you mention, and indeed the entire text toolbar at the bottom of the window - they only appear while you are editing text.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. It's done - you have no idea of the time and frustration this cost me yesterday! Your help is very much appreciated.

You're welcome; next time you can save even more time by adding the elision to the text palette by dragging and dropping.
Then, as you enter lyrics, you can drag and drop this elision from the palette.

I found it quite easy to add the elision mark to the text palette. You need to enable editing of the palette & then drag & drop the symbol from the master palette. Not quite as slick as a keyboard command, but pretty good.
