newbie: how to write 4/4 time with a triplet feel?
71 y/o total newbie bass player here also learning to read and write. How do I write 4/4 time with a triplet feel?
I'm counting: 1and uh, 2 and uh, 3 and uh, 4 and uh.
I begin the idea with notes on 4 and uh. (EAB) with the following 1 being an E note.
I can play this complete idea and inventions but I can't puzzle out how to write it. I tried 12/8 thinking that's possibly another way to think of it but can't make the rests resolve.
I use this feel a lot. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Paul

Add a swing text to your score (attached to the first note), and play with the setting (starting with the default 60%) until what you hear matches your feeling

That only works if you don't intend to actually add the triplets but instead only want to use the "1" and the "uh" without the "and".
12/8 is normally the way to do what I think you are describing. What problem are you having specifically with rests? The ones created automatically might not be created the way you expect, but rests can be entered manually too. If you continue to have trouble, please attach your score and describe in more detail what you are trying to do.

Thank you Marc Sabatella,
I had tried 12/8 entering 3 ea.1/4 note rests (thinking that equaled 9 eighth notes) and was unable to succeed. Following your lead I entered 9 1/8 note rests and was able to get my EAB triplet.
I very much appreciate your assistance.

For the record, in 12/8 what you want are dotted quarter notes and rests to represent a beat. If you want to use regular quarter notes for the beat, then you need to use regular triplets too.
Hi Paul, If you want to convert a note or rests to triplets, just select it and press Ctrl+3, or go to the "Add" menu then "Tuplets" and pick your odd subdivision of choice.
