Modifying and/or splitting staff and changing labels

• Mar 18, 2020 - 02:58

I am really new to MuseScore, using version 2.0.3 on my Linux Mint system. I am arranging a piece of a capella choral music. It's in ATTBB (Alto or Counter Tenor, Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Baritone, Bass) and I've entered my notes and lyrics for things. When I set it up, the staff labels looked like the first image. I would like it to look more like the second.

I cannot seem to find documentation for how to separate the current "Tenor" staffs or the "Bass" staffs so that I can name them "Tenor 1", "Tenor 2", "Baritone", and "Bass", respectively. If this can be done in my version of MuseScore, what are the steps? If I have to start from scratch, what's the proper way to do this?

Thanks.

It's hard to tell from just a picture - we can usually help better if you attach an actual score. But my guess is you added a single instrument for the two tenors, with two staves. Instead, you probably want two instruments, each with one staff. So add another instrument with one staff and delete one staff from the current.

BTW, 2.0.3 is extremely old, better to update to a more recent version - 3.4.2 is current. If your distribution doesn't provide anything better - and that's not uncommon - the supported way to run MuseScore on Linux is using the AppImage which you can download from this site. In 3.4.2, the operations I described are in Edit / Instruments, the menu might be different in 2.0.3.
