Condensing a piano accompaniment part for print

• May 3, 2016 - 04:09

Hi All

I have written a piece for solo + piano accomp where the piano accomp part is a duplicate whilst the solo part has slightly different markings.
ie. Solo part has a section A and Section B which are different but the piano part is the same in both sections.

At the moment I have simply duplicated the piano part in A to B, but this means there are several more page turns for the pianist than they would otherwise like.
So far the piece has 10 bars intro, 36 at A, 36 at B and 5 bars outro.

Is there a way to set up the score so the piano part is marked with a repeat so that instead of being (say) 8 page turned it comes down to 3 or 4

My options so far seem limited
Option 1 - write it out in full and the pianist just has a lot of page turns
Option 2 - create a second solo line and use hidden measures somehow and set it up as a 1st/2nd volta

Is there any other way. Does anyone have examples of how this might be don and also how, when I play it back the Solo line is played like it would if i use Option 1

Without seeing the scores it's hard to say for sure. Generally, having a different numbers of measures in some reason for one part than another is an extremely bad idea, as it means measure numebrs won't align and much rehearsal time will be wasted as you try to start from measure 27 but it's a different measure in different parts, or if you say "let's take it from the second time at letter A" and some people don't have repeats at all so they have no idea what you mean. An extra page turn is no big deal in comaprison. Which is why no music is ever published this way, and why MuseScore has no direct support for this.

That said, there are certainly rare cases where it might make sense anyhow, so if you are sure there won't be problems created, the best thing to do is just create a new score, copy/paste the content into it, and then reduce it as you see fit.

Yes, fully appreciate your comments, but having played in bands for over 30years its not uncommon for the conductor to say "From 'A' for the second time" and given that in musescore you can change the bar numbering or rehearsal marks it wouldnt be that big a deal in that sense.

I'll have to take the long approach and copy the piano part to a separate score and then 'condense' it.
