Translating from Guitar to Piano Grand Staff

• May 15, 2016 - 05:41

Hello all,

I have a piece that is originally guitar that I am trying to get into Musescore for Grand Staff piano.

It's relatively easy to play but I really want this in Grand Staff as I'm in trying to force myself to read both staffs as I'm getting better at Piano. (I used to play Sax so reading just the Treble is easy.)

I'm having trouble getting measure 6 & 7 to look neat and easily readable for piano. The layers overlap in measure 6. I understand you can move note heads, but the bars aren't moving with it, so it looks really odd. How do you get the bars to move also.

Measure 7 (And 8) I would like to the second and third set of notes to look clean FROM the bass clef to the treble. Is there any way to input a melody/harmony across both staffs played sequentially without using layers? It treats the staffs as separate entities

I attached the sheet music and a quick photoshop sketch of measure 8 as I would like it to look in Musescore.

In general, you should almost *never* need to move notes manually. And I don't see anything in measures 6-7 of the picture you posted that would require it. As far as I can tell, just entering those notes normally would work right out of the box. Your picture of how you want measure 8 to look does not make sense - you have too few beats, or else you are missing the very necessary leading rest. If you wenter the leading rest, everything should be correct. It's possible you are entering something incorrectly, but we'd need you to post the actual score (not just a picture of how you want it to look) in order to say for sure.

Sorry for the delay in getting back, been way too busy. I took a bit of each of your post to help me get to a place that will work.

I copied the entire piece from a Finale file I had laying around that was all digital (still only in Treble Staff) so at least everything was "there."

The cross beaming is helping me move stuff around so it looks like a proper piano piece. The only problem I'm having with that is the rest are sometimes left over. I guess I'm cheating in that Musescore doesn't recognize that I have input something in the bass staff (Just slid it down from the treble) so it thinks I need a rest when I don't. I can't find a way to delete them.

In regard to moving notes, yeah I get what you were saying. It seems that Musescore wouldn't "reset" the measure after I input everything so notes were overlapping, it was a mess.

The .mscz is attached for you guys to view if you want. Notice measures 7, 8, 11, 12 etc. how the rest are left over in the bass clef. I'm still working with getting the bass notes on the bass staff but all your advice seems to be getting me on the right track.

You can make the rests (or anything else) invisible by selecting them and pressing "V". But when I look at your measure 7 (for example), the only reason you have so many rests is that you are using multiple voices when you don't need to. That whole passage could have been notated with one voice in each staff. But it also seems the low D & C# that you moved to the bottom staff really should have simply been entered in the bottom staff to begin with. There is what seems to be a pretty clear melodic line C#-D-C# that is kind of obscured by the way it is currently notated. Or is this a copy of an actual published edition?

That is what the music looks like from my print, but again that is written for guitar for one staff. (This isn't published, just someone's transcription) I get what your saying and I started to see that myself. I've been working on it the last hour or so and I've been cleaning some things like that up. Some of it I am leaving because it'll be easier to read. I would need to extend notes to have to come out looking correct, which I may end up doing. Thanks, didn't think about that.

Which brings me to another question; is there a way to have a note on one voice split to each staff? So the first note would be "shared" on both hands to descend or ascend to there seperate parts?

If the note has the same duration in both voices, then this happens automatically. If it has different durations, then you can still force the notehead to be shared by using the Inspector to explicitly set the notehead of one to match that of the other ("Note / Head type"). Or making one invisible (click, press "V").

If that doesn't answer your questions, please post an example showing what you mean.
