Problem with written accents
Hi, gang!!!
I use MuseScore 2.0.3 and 2.0.2. Both into Ubuntu Studio 16.04 LTS.
The problem is that MuseScore 2.0.3 doesn't show any written accent (remember I live in Chile, Spanish language, with written accent and "ñ").
When I write the lyrics, titles, etc. inside a music score, with MuseScore 2.0.3, I can't get the written accents.
BUT... If I write the lyrics, titles, etc. inside a music score, with MuseScore 2.0.2, then I get the written accents.
Is it a bug? ???
Is it something we can fix with... some "cryptic" solution? ???
???
Thanks a lot for your time!!!
Greetings & Blessings from Chile!!!!!!!
Juan

How are you trying to write the accents? What font are you using? Can you post a score demonstrating the problem and precise steps to reproduce the problem? It works fine for me using My First Score as follows:
1) double click Title
2) press F2 to display special characters dialog
3) double click the ñ or any other accented character
Are you doing something different from this?

Marc, I don't understand the need for that approach. I use a multi-lingual keyboard as my default, and work in two or three languages simultaneously on some scores. I have never had a problem with MuseScore failing to honour accents in a font.

The need for the approach I mention exists idf you don't have a multilingual keybaord :-) Anyhow, I don't see any problem with 2.0.3 even if I try other means of entering the accented characters such as copying and pasting from other text (I used the ñ from the OP).

Ah, but then he's in Chile, so I would expect him to be using something other than the standard US English keyboard. :o)
Of course, I could be wrong. Some users aren't aware they can change the default keyboard layout with a few judiciously-placed clicks. :-(

I, almost always, use the "Century School Book" font (just "my way").
I use the "standard" Latin Layout Keyboard (almost, "the" keyboard layout available here).
I use the simple "standard" way to get a written accent:
1) First, I type on the written accent key [´].
2) Then, I type on the written accented character [a], or [e], or [i], or [o], or [u].
As I can see (according to your words), I will have to use the [F2] to get those special characters, BUT...
Why? ???
With the "old" 2.0.2 version, I can get these special characters directly from my keyboard!
Why the change into 2.0.3? ???
???

AFAIK there hasn't been a deliberate change from 2.0.2 to 2.0.3, so if it's not working for you something's wrong somewhere. I know nothing about your OS, so I can't help with that, but Marc is one of the developers here; I'm sure he'll be able to offer a few suggestions.
Have you tried copy-and-pasting from a text in another application (a text already containing accents) instead of typing the text directly into the score? And if so, do the accents show up?

I don't have a keyboard with the special feature you describe for entering th eaccented character, so I can't test whether it still works for me or not. As far as I know, nothing *should* have changed between 2.0.2 and 2.0.3, but maybe someone else with access to one of those keyboards can test and see if they can figure anything out.

Marc--these are not physical keyboards; they are just software keyboard layouts, downloadable from (or pre-installed by) whoever wrote your OS. There is no special hardware involved. I don't know anything about Unbutu, but for Windows machines the dialogue is in Control Panel>Region and Language.

With Ubuntu, the keyboard layout is automatically detected by the system.
I don't have any kind of troubles when I use the keyboard with any other software (Libre Office, Audacity, etc.)

Okay, but can you choose a default keyboard and several alternates which can be enabled with a keyboard shortcut or something similar? Because I work in multiple languages, I have German, Italian, Canadian Multilingual, French Standard, and U.S. English keyboards 'activated' so that I can cycle through them using CTL+SHIFT. Can you do that in Ubuntu?

Sure enough! Found it. ñ Yep, it works here :-) But sure enough, it doesn't in MuseScore. Thsat sort of processing is generally done for us by the OS andor Qt, so I'm not sure what we could be doing to cause it not to work. I was thinking it might have to do with all the special handling we do for text editing, but for me, it doesn't even work in simple dialog boxes like File / Score Properties or File / Open. So it really seems Qt-related, except that supposedly we didn't change Qt versions between 2.0.2 and 2.0.3.
Yes!
I can use the "Copy and Paste" technique, from an external text app, to get written accent characters with MuseScore 2.0.3.

Did 2.0.3 ever work with accents in your system, or have you had this problem since you first installed it?
If it used to work and no longer does, I might suggest a 'System Restore' to a time before the problem manifested itself. It is possible that an update to something else (or the installation of a new program) might have created a conflict with MuseScore. If the problem disappears after a System Restore, that would be a good indication that that's what happened.
If not, I don't know what else to suggest but to try uninstalling and reinstalling MuseScore. If that solves the problem, it would show that somehow the program became corrupted after you first installed it.

MuseScore 2.0.3 didn't and doesn't show written accent from the first installation.
There is no an "official" MuseScore 2.0.3 downloable and installable version to Ubuntu. We have to use the "portable" version, so... I use this "portable" version.
Maybe... The "portable" version could be the reason? ???
BTW: I'm relatively new with Ubuntu (Lynux) OS, so... I don't know if Ubuntu (or any other Lynux OS version) lets us to "restore" to another past security point (as Windows does). And, if it lets us to perform something like that, I don't have any clue about how to do it. Sorry!!!

Yes, you could right that the AppImage has something to do with the problem. I don't seem to have the issue with versions I build myself, although those are built with different Qt libraries.

@Marc--Well, at this point I guess the question is, should this be written up in the Issue Tracker?

Sure, makes sense.

@Jotape--I'm sorry that I can't help you on the 'restore' issue for Ubuntu; my entire computer experience is on XP and Win7. There are probably people on this forum who could advise you on how Ubuntu handles this; here's hoping one of them will chime in.
OTOH, if there is indeed an issue with the AppImage as Marc thinks there might be, restoring to a previous state wouldn't make any difference. So I guess the best thing would be to use the earlier version of MuseScore until this is solved.
Hola Juan! I'm chilean but I live in barcelona now... and I have the same problem... my OS is Ubuntu based, for now I put the accents with f2 symbol palette... when I write choral music in spanish or catalan uuuf! it's a hard work (exagero).

HI, brother!!!
There is always a Chilean people, anywhere, Hahahaha!!!
About the accents issue, I decided to get back to 2.0.2 version and... Now I don't have any kind of problem with it.
I understand that it isn't an issue to the English language users because they don't use written accents. But, in the Spanish language world... This is a very important issue!!!
Well, I have been read some articles about this and I have the idea that Marc was right about it is a Qt issue. Unfortunately, I'm not a programmer, so... I don't have any skill to fix it, by now.
Greetings & Blessings to All, from Chile (with a very hot springtime)!!!
