Two lines of music in the same measure

I am writing a piece of music in 3/4 time and I have a section where the instrument is playing 8th notes above the vocal that is singing a dotted half note. When I try to put the dotted half note in the measure it kicks out the 8th notes. What do I have to do to add the dotted half note to the measure wile keeping the 8th notes.
