Can you get us more details? Maybe scan a handwritten or photocopied example and attach it to your post?
I'm guessing you are referring to triplets. See the Handbook under "Tuplets" to learn how to do this (short answer: select total length of group, then press Ctrl+3).
If that's not what you mean, then indeed, a picture would help, or at least a better description.
