Another method is to use one measure per line, work out how many beats you want on each line, and set the "actual" time signature of each measure to that figure (right click, measure properties). Assuming the piece lends itself to layout line by line, this could seems less awkward to deal with than arbitrarily long measures. Or not.
Hi, I was just looking for this too, and here's what I did: enter new time signature, but make invisible and decrease trailing space to -2.3 (or thereabouts--that's what made the measured space normal on my sheet.) Added for posterity and future searchers!
There is a better way, FYI: right click the staff, Staff Properties, uncheck the "Show time signatures" box. Then use the split & join commands under Edit / Measure as needed.
@Marc Sabatella, I don't see any split and join commands under either Edit, or right clicking the staff and selecting Measure properties I don't see and Edit/Measure as needed. Can you point me in the right direction please?
Split/Join is under Tools > Measure, not under Edit > Measures.
Actual duartion is in mesure properties, via right-click into a measure, but Marc talked about Staff properties, which is also under right-click into a measure

Create a score and set the time sig to the maximum, 63/1. Then hide the time sig and the barlines (right-click -> set invisible)

"Can you point me in the right direction". Thie handbook is always a good place to head for; https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/measure-operations#split-join for example.

Thanks, I'll get onto that later, looks most useful for the students next project.
