How to enable playback of just one voice?

• Apr 2, 2012 - 15:11

Hello,
I am looking to play (preferably save) just the bass (#4) part of my score for a vocal learning track. All four parts are written on two staves on the same sheet. Is there a way to play/save just one part and not just all four?

Not directly, at least not in the current version (looks like more control might be coming in 2.0). But if you are trying to produce a recording for practice purposes, I would add a new temporary staff, copy the current bottom staff (tenor + bass for SATB; I guess barbershop is different) to that temporary staff, right click a note in the *other* voice on that staff, select->more and choose the option to select all notes in the same voice on the same staff, then exit the dialog and hit Delete. This will leae just the notes on the voice you want. Then you can use the Mixer to solo that staff.

I'd like to do this as well... but the response wasn't an answer for what I need: I want to just play one of my four parts on the playback. Any help? I'm using 2.0

.What do you mean by "part" in this context? The OP was very specific that he had two staves, with two voices per staff. Is that what you have as well? In which case, the response already given is indeed how you can do it as well.

If you already have four separate staves, then it's simpler - just go to View / Mixer and Solo the staff you want.

To avoid all this issue, I always write just one voice per staff (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass). So, I can
control each voice, separately, with the MIXER.

Also, I use different instruments to these voices:
a) Oboe, to soprano.
b) Clarinet, to alto.
c) French Horns, to tenor.
d) Tuba, to bass.

The same thing with male quartet arrangements.

BUT... A very good point: when you start a new piece, from the scratch, you have to select "voices", as the instrument to all your voices, when the program ask you for the instruments you will use.

Why? Simple. The program uses the standard range and pitch from the standard classical instruments. So, as an example, the clarinet will have a B flat as a C (transposing instrument). It is too much work to write the right note you want this way. To avoid it, you choose "voice" (related to human voices) and you will not have any problem to write the notes. You will choose the hearing instrument (a clarinet, as example), at the MIXER, only AFTER the starting point menu.

It's my taste, but I can sure it is the best way.

Of course, it will need more paper when you're printing it.

To avoid this, you have to follow the directions to convert a 4 staves score into a 2 staves, with 2 voices per staff, score. This is easy and fast.

Just a humble last advice: I always have two copies of each human voices score I write:
1) 4 voices into 4 staves (only to teach and rehearsal).
2) 4 voices into 2 staves (to print into less pages).

To distinguish between the two versions of the same piece, I add the "print" word to the title of the 4 voices, 2 staves, version.

That's all, folks!!!

Greetings & Blessings from Chile!!!!!!!

Very good answer, but I have some additions how I work.

As I write choral music for men I do just like you:
1) 4 voices into 4 staves (only to teach and rehearsal).
2) 4 voices into 2 staves (to print into less pages).

When I have written #1 I go to "File", "Voices" (I think it's "voices" but I not sure as I have the Swedish version of MS2. Anyway it's just below the "Close" command). There you can separate the score into voices and listen to it while following the notes and the lyrics.

I'll attach a template for that if you want to use it, but you have to change the voice names to Spanish and maybe the instruments to as I use piano in all voices.

This is how I do it: The following procedure works by clefts, by the whole score, or by just any notes you want played, (in a voice plus piano score you would have three of these, singer, treble, bass).
To play just one voice (or only the notes you want, for that matter) you select the notes that you DO NOT want to play, by clicking on each one while holding the Ctrl key down, or for doing big groups of them by clicking on the first note and then the last note on that cleft while holding down the Shift key, same procedure you'd do for selecting text. Once the notes have been selected on that particular cleft, go to the F8 "inspector" >> press "Notes", and deselect "Play". Do the same for the other clefts you don't want to play. then play back the music and this time you will only hear those notes you wanted played. If you only want to play a few notes, then it's better to mute the whole composition by clicking on the very first rest or note, and while holding down "Shift" clicking on the very last rest or note, then going to the F8 "inspector" clicking on "notes" and deselecting "Play". The whole thing will be mute now. Then go and select those few notes you do want played, and then go the the "inspector" click "notes" and select "Play". Only those notes you selected (wherever they are) will be played back. This has worked for me. But I'm on the lookout for a better more convenient procedure. But this will do in an emergency.
