Serious drawbacks of Musescore
First some background information: All this is current as of Musescore v1.1. I have not had enough time to extensively recheck all this information with the new upgrade. I mainly use my Powerbook G4, which is running Mac OS X Tiger, or 10.4.11, and Musescore v1.1. I also use a Mac mini, recently upgraded to Mac OS X Lion as well as updated to v1.2 of Musescore. I run the Windows XP version of Musescore v1.1 from my network drive at school. OK. Now onto the issues.
My school has Finale on their computers, and I've tried it out and noticed three significant advantages it has over Musescore.
The first is that it is more fixed– things automatically go somewhere or at the very least "snap" into place. There is an option in the preferences that lets one manually change the layout & placement of objects, but this is not the case in Musescore. In Musescore, things are either (1) anchored/tied to one note for playback purposes only & the user can drag them everywhere without a reset switch (e.g. dynamic markings), or (2) they are usually locked in place, but every once in a while the user "breaks" the lock and it results in confusion (e.g. the separation of note heads from stems). This issue is VERY obvious when I try and put articulations and/or ornaments into my score.
The second advantage concerns page layout, more specifically how systems are spread on a page. When I use this program, as well as in the past, there have been times when Musescore started a new page when there was clearly enough room on the previous one if Musescore hadn't used so much extra white space between the systems! Now, I don't know where that setting is, nor have I found a tutorial to explain it as such, but it would be nice to have Musescore a bit more automated. But enough about that.
The third suggestion I have is simple– the exporter doesn't work well. This seems to be a serious problem– the only thing that has saved me is the fact that Macs have a "Save as PDF…" option in their Print menu. When I export to PDF from inside Musescore, it trims the page size to Musescore's default paper size, and when I'm working with a score for a full symphony orchestra, Letter and A4 just won't cut it. And this isn't just with exporting to PDF, it's with JPG as well. When I export to JPG from Musescore, it saves the right number of pages, but each and every one is a 25x25-pixel white square. You can imagine my frustration. Well anyways, I hope I've brought some valid points to everybody's attention, seeing as I'm not a programmer nor have the ability to comprehend/ memorize/ remember the languages.
Thank you so much for taking so much your time to read this! I truly wish Musescore to return music to what it should be, and that is free for all– free to share, to collaborate, to encourage, to uplift, to inspire, to strengthen, to embolden, to… I'll stop there. Thanks again, hope I've helped.

Place, ent of articulation and other markings is definitely an area where there is lots of room for improvements; you might wish to check out the current discussion in the Technology Preview forum if you have ideas to contribute. As for export, if you have a specific score and steps to reproduce, I am sure that would be helpful. i know there are known issues with PSF export on certain versions of MacOS that seem to affect some people but not others; I don't know if anyone has completely gotten to the bottom of that issue. Updating to 1.2 couldn't hurt.
But as for page layout, it seems likely it is a simple matter of your not having your page margins (lYout->page settings) and system distance settings (style->edit general style->page) set appropriate for whatever it is you are trying to do. It should be pOssible to achieve virtually any layout you like with the correct settings. Have you read the Handbook page about "Layout and formatting"?
