Problems with sound
I've been trying to install a score editor on Ubuntu, and MuseScore seems like the easiest one to use (I've also tried Rosegarden). I can edit music fine, but I have been unable to produce any sound. In fact, every time I start either Rosegarden or MuseScore, the sound of my computer stops working, and this problem persists when I close either program.
I've read up on jack, qsynth, timidity etc. and I've followed all the steps required to connect the output of Rosegarden/MuseScore to them, but no luck. (The MIDI input of qsynth/timidity appear fine, but produce no sound.)
Any ideas?

No idea for the other software but for MuseScore, can you tell which version you are using (Help -> About) ? Also which version of Ubuntu are you using?
Can you post a screen capture of Preferences -> I/O ? See this post : http://musescore.org/en/node/16330

The version of MuseScore I installed is 1.1 and I run Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10). Screenshot is attached.

same advice than in the other post. Uncheck ALSA and keep portaudio. Restart MuseScore. Check if the sound is working. If not, play with the two portaudio options.
Btw, you can install MuseScore 1.2 on Oneiric from this PPA : https://launchpad.net/~mscore-ubuntu/+archive/mscore-stable
