How do you connect several bars together?
Okay then. I am new here and am wishing to connect several bars with a single decrescendo. Can anyone tell me how? I know how to do the decrescendo but have no clue how to select several bars at once.

Then double-click on the symbol in the palette
You need to click the first note of decrescendo and then shift-click the last note. The > is the default shortcut for a decrescendo. (< for crescendo)
You can also lengthen (or shorten) an existing hairpin by double clicking it then using shift+right (or left).
