I'm sorry to report that despite "swing " setting switched to "off," all eighth notes are being "swung" on playback, even when I moved the "swing ratio" to 50%.
Other question - how do I set "play back to play a passage without starting each time at the beginning of the piece?

See the Handbook under Swing and make sure you have turned off the swing in both of the places it might be set (in the general style options as well as any staff texts). Most likely you did only one but not the other. If that doesn't allow you to figure it out, then attach the score so we can see what you might be missing (perhaps there is a swing text that is set to invisible, for example).
