Note length and sound
EX: I put two eighth notes next to each other and they are connected by a tie. It should produce the sound of a quarter note, but instead, it plays both eighth notes as if they weren't tied at all. This problem occurs with all kinds of notes for me. I use this program to help myself in understanding rhythms. When this kind of problem occurs it makes it harder to study. Can someone tell me what to do or try to fix it? Thanks.

This seems to depend on which instrument you use, I tried with piano and there tied notes sound only once.
Can you post an example, or steps to reproduce? Are you sure you entered a tie (the "+" key, or the icon on the note entry palette above the main window) and not a slur (the "S" key, or the the curved shape on the Lines palette)? Slurs are not ties, although they are sometimes mistaken for them.
Anyhow, the point is, ties *do* normally play back correctly if entered correctly.
Are you perhaps using a "slur" rather than a "tie"?

So I looked into it and I have been using a slur all this time. So, how do insert a "tie"?

This is what I found when I searched "tie": http://musescore.org/en/search/apachesolr_search/tie

Under methods, it says i need to press a plus button. I do press it on my keyboard and noting happens. I have a Windows 7 so maybe that could be a problem?

No. Have you read tHE handbook section on note entry, or watched any of the tutorial videos? They should help a lot with this and any other issues you might be having.
But for the record, the tie button works one of two ways. One way is to press it *while in note entry mode", in which case it enters a new note and automatically ties it to the current note (doesn't work if you have moved the cursor since entering that note). The other way way is to press it while *not* in note entry mode, in which case you have to have already entered the two notes you want to tie, and have to have clicked the first one before pressing "+".

I've tried it both ways and nothing changes. I mainly tried the 2nd way because I already had the notes written. Any ideas? By the way thank you for helping me so far, I think I'm close to figuring out the problem.

and still in note entry mode press the value of your second note then the + on the numeric keypad, or shift = on a laptop (or click the + sign on the ribbon in between the double dot and the crotchet rest). If you want to tie to the same value (I rarely do), just press the + sign (or one of the above) without selecting another note value.
