HELP!! Lost File!

• Aug 15, 2012 - 17:10

I use Version 1.2 of MuseScore, Windows 7 Pro. Yesterday I was writing a duet for soprano/alto for use in a worship service the last Sunday of this month. I wrote the song in two parts - Chorus, and Verses. Somehow or other, the more complicated of the two, the Verses, has disappeared. I am what might be considered a moderately experienced computer user. I do not believe that I, even accidentally, erased the file. But if I did, could there possibly any way of recovering it? It is not in my Recycle Bin, and my History reveals only the times that I was logged on to download the program. The two pieces are entitled, "This is the Day Chorus," and the lost file, "This is the Day Verses."

I really am quite desperate and I am not knowledgeable enough to know how to recover a lost file; although I understand that nothing in cyberspace is ever really lost! Any suggestions or solutions? I need this music for tonight! In the meantime I am frantically trying to rewrite from memory what I have lost. Even if you do not get back to me before tonight, I will appreciate any suggestions and help you can offer me, on the (hopefully small) chance that this happens again.

Thank you very much!

Is it possible you simply saved it to a different folder than you intended? If you know the filename, can you do a search of your filesystem for it?

If you know for sure what folder it used to be in, you can also check to see if the backup is still there - it would have the same name but with a period in front an command at the end.

You could try to check File -> Recent files in MuseScore. If there is not trace here, you can try to browse C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\MusE\MuseScore\ and see if one of the mscz files here is the one you are looking for. Are you sure you were logged in with the same user?

I am the only user, so it would have been hard to sign on as another - although these days in cyber-space, one never knows. Perhaps I morphed into another while notating! LOL!

I am pretty sure that I checked just about everywhere on my computer that I could think of, including the Recent files (I tried over and over - kept hoping it would magically appear if I just looked again!). I also did the complete browse, including (in real desperation) breaking down and reading each bin in the program. Oh well, as stated in my response to Marc, I went ahead and spent ten hours rewriting. . .at least something got done, even if it isn't the same as the original. Of course the only problem with those sorts of "lost" things is that they are always so much better in your memory than they probably are (were) in reality. Maybe it's just as well i didn't recover the file!

Thanks for your suggestions!

Thanks for your response. Your suggestions were among the first I tried before resorting to the forum here. Still no recovery. . .I ended up spending ten hours parked in front of my computer yesterday rewriting the music and arrangement for the verses. I don't think it is much like what was lost, but in any event, it had to do! I will do all in my power to avoid this ever happening again!

Thank you!
