Ubuntu (Linux) Possible Bug When Renaming File
I was working on a string quartet version of Road to Lisdoonvarna/Swallowtail Jig. I had gotten done with the Road to Lisdoonvarna part, so I saved and quit. Before I shut down my laptop, though, I decided to rename the file. I went to My Documents, and chaged the file name from "road-swallotail_score.mscz" to "lisdoonvarna-swallowtail_score.mscz" because I just thought it was a better-fitting name. Naturally, I deleted the shortcut (or "link" as Ubuntu calls it) on my desktop, and made a new one off of the newly-renamed project file. I dragged the newborn link (shortcut) to my desktop, and, again before shuting off my laptop, I decided to listen and marvel at my genius. I clicked on the link, and the score was empty, except for the title and basically everything MuseScore asks you to fill out before you actully begin inputting notes. You can imagine my heartbreak.
Here are the details:
-Ubuntu 12.04
-64 bit Gateway laptop
-I created the first shortcut ("road-swallowtail_score") as soon as I started the project, and, ever since, I only used the link (shortcut) on my desktop to open the file and edit my work.
Any ideas as to what might have caused it? Is it an OS issue? Any light on the subject would be greatly appreaciated.
Needless to say, I move the files to the desktop, now. No more shortcuts.

Hard to imagine how it could be a MuseScore issue since everything you described doing (renaming, moving links_ was done from your desktop software.
But FWIW, my guess is you accidentally made your link point to the MuseScore backup file (starts with period, ends with comma). Or something like that.

Yes it's probably a human mistake. I can see two things that failed. The first link on the desktop was not a link but the actual file you copy pasted at the beginning. Or as Marc suggested, you linked the MuseScore backup file.
If you are lucky, and using a recent version, you can check
YOURHOME/.local/share/data/MusE/MuseScore/
, your work might be saved here in one of the mscz files.
