Selecting edit element should launch inspector
At present, if inspector is not visible and edit element is selected for an element, there is no visible result.

That depends upon what you are editing. It seems that this is being worked on in 3.0 from other discussions I remember.

I can't easily conceive that the element choice makes a difference. Please educate me. Thanks.

If you edit a slur for example, there is obvious feed back, while a staccato dot or even a note head does nothing.

It has been suggested that we display an edit handle even for elements that don't technically need them. See for instance the discussion in https://musescore.org/en/node/109366. Which also happens to touch on the question of selecting overlapping elements.

It would be more logical to grey out elements that clicking it does nothing.
"Edit element" has nothing to do with the Inspector. It places the element in "Edit mode", which generally allows for fine-tuning the position using cursor keys, or other operations (lke changing shape of slurs, context of text, etc). The Inspector can be used whether or not you are in Edit mode; that's a totally separate thing.
