Thank you for reporting this. I wrote a bug report: http://musescore.org/en/node/1821
The only workaround I could find is to create a half note followed by two quarter notes, leave note entry and tie the half note to the first quarter note.

I had already thought of that solution. Unfortunately, it is really ugly to see. I hope that this bug is resolved soon.
It would be nice if in future you have the possibility to have different times for each staff (eg in early music is very useful)
possible solution:
change the markup in the xml document. duration - value- duration
or not?

yes, it works!
I created the triplet and dotted with finale notepad demo and saved in xml.
Then I opened with musescore et voila .. it is then possible to copy it to infinity
Then... modifying the xml markup, you can temporarily resolve

Nice :) MusicXML import seems to have more feature than musescore input :)
