Scanning and importing a pdf music file into Muse Score

Because I use Muse Score as a practice aid for my choirs, finding a way to simplify the hours needed to create scores for my singers is getting more important. Muse Score has an experimental scanning process, but I've found it doesn't read the music well, making it almost impossible to make the necessary changes. Plus, it doesn't appear to save the score for more than a day or two, which makes it completely unusable. Anyone know how to make this scanning task easier on Muse Score? Or should I consider just purchasing Smart Score or another scanning software? If yes, which software would you recommend and why?
