A repeat with 1st and 2nd time endings doesn't work correctly when I use the 'DC al Coda' & 'DS al Fine' methods

• Jan 10, 2013 - 21:08

Hello everyone
I don't know if I do something wrong, but I think that I have followed all the istructions for this.
I do the same steps as shown in the video "Part 8 - Codas" an everthing goes right, but if I have a repeat with a 1st and 2nd time ending before the position of DS al Fine jump, the 3d time pas doesn't work correctly.
For better understanding i give the follow example.

The following line represents the song and the known positions.
Beggining........[Segno]..........[Start Repeat]..............[Repeat Ending 1][Repeat Ending 2]................[DS al Fine]...............Fine

The current passes:
1. Beggining ---> [Repeat Ending 1] ---> [Start Repeat] [ Correct]
2. [Start Repeat] ---> [Repeat Ending 2] ---> [DS al Fine] [ Correct]
3. [DS al Fine] ---> [Segno] ---> [Repeat Ending 2] ---> Fine [ WRONG ]

It should follow the following passes:
1. Beggining ---> [Repeat Ending 1] ---> [Start Repeat] [ Correct]
2. [Start Repeat] ---> [Repeat Ending 2] ---> [DS al Fine] [ Correct]
3. [DS al Fine] ---> [Segno] ---> [Repeat Ending 1] ---> [Start Repeat] [ Correct]
4. [Start Repeat] ---> [Repeat Ending 2] ---> [DS al Fine] [ Correct]

I would appreciate if someone can help me on this
John

Hi John -

Can you post the MuseScore file for your piece of music? That will help us see what's going on better.

Thanks!

I understand what he means and can reproduce it. Repeats from the Repests palette don't mix and macht well with the repeats barlines, these seem to get ignored or assumed to be on the last run after a jump occured. And I'm not sure what the musical rules are in these cases, so I'm not sure whether this is a bug

See the score from http://musescore.org/en/node/19652, with a Segno and a DS it plays the repeat 3 times, not 4

When a song contains both repeats barlines and da capo or dal Segno, you must first run the bars recovery only then the da capo or dal Segno. In addition, it's usual to ignore the repeats barlines after running da capo or dal Segno.

Thank you all for your immediate response.
I understand that I don't follow the right way in order to do what I want with my song.
Is there any other propper way that I can do it?
Simply, I need to replay a part of a song that containg barlines with different repeat endings, more than twice.
I don't have any problem to send you this part of my song, but I can't do this now because I am answering from my mobile phone.
Thanks you I advanced

if it comes to perform on stage, use e.g. system text or by adding that hint to the DS text to tell the musician what you want.
If it comes to playback in MuseScore, duplicate the measures, copy/paste.

Hold on: if you joust want to repeat a section more than twice: increase the repeats count of the last measure of the repeat (right-click-> measure properties)

First of all, thank for your answer update. Ofcourse your ways give me a solution to my case.
But, in order to help you to understand excactly what i mean, i send you attached 2 files. They include a test (stupid) music in two different methods an notify the case i am telling you.
The first file "TEST1" is the most correct, but as you can see the "repeat ending 1" is not played at the second pass (after DS al Fine).
The second file "TEST2", is a try (maybe wrong based on the music rules) to implement the same thing only with repeating barlines. A general repeatition which has a repeat with 1st and 2nd time endings inside.
In this case the hearing result is completely different compared to what i want to be and, maybe completely wrong.
Thnak you again.

John

Repeat barlines don't nest, every start repeat needs to be followed by an end repeat, that is why test2 doesn't work at all
That inner repeat seems to be supposed to be played 4 tuimes, but the last measure before the end repeat still has a repeat count of 2, not 4. But that still doesn't seem what you want either., right?

in test1 the repeat barlines are just ignored after the jump (or rather be interpreted as being the last run), you just can't get that to play back correctly (other than duplicateing the measures). You can only get the performer to play it correctly by making some clear text advice how you want it played

Ok... I understand. it is not correct what I expected to have. Thank you all for your advices.
I thought that only with the appropriate symbolism, I could have both the correct and complete hearing and printing
result - product.
I am not a proffesional musician, but i find this software very friendly and proffesional too.
Very good job. Keep developing... ;)
