No sound
Hi all,
I recently downloaded Musescore 2.1 on my Macbook (OSX 10.12.4). Strangely, there wasn't any sound when I clicked a note or playback. However, I have the same programme on my iMac (OSX 10.11.6) and everything works fine there.
Thereafter, I experimented downloading Musescore 1 on the macbook. To my surprise, things were working normally (i.e. there is playback sound!).
I would appreciate if someone could help me with this problem. I've tried to factory reset Musescore 2 / all the troubleshooting I could find in the forum to no avail.
Cheers,
Gerald

Hi Gerald,
Thank you for reporting this issue. We have seen this particular issue popup for macOS users when upgrading from one version to another. My assumption is that you have hit the same issue. Let's see if we can get to the bottom of it this time.
Could you check if you find a soundfont listed under View > Synthesizer?
In reply to Hi Gerald, Thank you for by Thomas
Hi Thomas,
Yes there is indeed a soundfont – FluidR3Mono_GM.sf3.
Just to clarify: I bought the macbook new, so it came with OSX Sierra installed, but my desktop is still on Mavericks.
What should I do next?
Thanks!

I have the same exact problem
There seems to be a problem for som Mac users and MuseScore 2.1, see also: //musescore.org/en/node/198841 .

Hi Kuwitt,
Thank you for your reply. I've read the link you've provided, and downloaded an older version (2.0.3) of Musescore from a third party website. I can confirm that there is indeed sound output in this version, so it seems there is a serious bug in v.2.1 with OS Sierra.
I'm new to Musescore - mainly a Sibelius user - but am looking for a viable open source software to teach some basic composition. I am so far impressed at the level of sophistication of the menus. The audio bug in v.2.1 is the last obstacle and I hope the developers will address this issue, pronto.

What do you see in Edit / Preferences / I/O?
So far, to my knowledge, the issue affects only some Sierra users not others, and as far as I know no one on the development team has been able to reproduce this. So we still rely on users to do as much investigative work on their own as they can. Could turn out to be a conflict with some particular application that you have installed. You might try uninstalling any likely candidates (other programs that deal with MIDI or audio) to see if that makes a difference. But that's just a guess on my part.

Hi Marc,
Under API: Core Audio; Device: Built-in Output. It's similar in both versions 2.1 and v.2.0.3. So I've no idea what's going on really. I have not had any MIDI controllers/devices installed on my Macbook. It's a new laptop, and I barely loaded anything except the usual Microsoft Office etc.
May I suggest to the developers to give an option to download v.2.0.3 on the website for affected users like me? At least it's working...

Don't load MuseScore from any 3rd party website, take it from https://musescore.org/en/download#Older-versions

It looks like there is a problem with bluetooth devices. When bluetooth is turned off, the sound will be output to the internal speakers
Hello, same problem here.
MacOs 10.12.6 (Sierra) and MuseScore 2.1 do not work together on sound. Using Jack as an in-between I have sound. Downgrade to Version 2.0.3 (sourceforge) has sound. I only had to change the screens default colors.

2.0.3.1 fixes the screen color issue, btw.
As far as I know the Mac sound problem that some people are seeing is still mystifying, but the consensus seems to be it represents a conflict with some other program on the system that is preventing the audio system from being available to MuseScore.

Reg. sound see #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty
Update: on my macBook Pro everything is wel with 2.1. My other machine (the one I complained about) is a Hackintosh. I am trying to get portaudiio working, but as I said, Jack is a good solution. In the meantime, I work with 2.0.3.1.
I have the same problem, except I use Windows 10.

The issue should be fixed in cae320e (master) and 596f6c2 (2.2). See #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty for details.
