Inconsistent cross heads

Still very newly learning the ropes here; I'm running on Ubuntu 16LTS, if this makes a difference.

I want to swap all notes in just one voice into cross heads to indicate damping on wire strung harp. Various methods given here work some of the time, though I haven't yet found a consistent one. But the crosses vary. Some are ordinary "x" heads, some are open crosses. I haven't found what decides this - all x's would be good.

Regular half notes and longer have open heads, so when changed to cross, these are open too, at least when you change the head group only. When you also change head type to quarter, you'll get a plain x.
