Suite for Piano #1

• Sep 14, 2017 - 23:09

Suite for Piano tells the story of a man who has lost his happiness in life only to be literally picked up from the curb by a dear friend. It is a tribute to my loving spouse, who has known me much of my life. The work is cast in five movements in various key signatures including two dance works, one tragic, one romantic, and a finale. The work took nearly one year of reflection. Those who play this work for live performance are encouraged to embellish in conservative measure.

[PROGRAM:]

-[I - "An Evening's Waltz" in Eb, Tempo 76]-
The opening of the piece is best played in the style of a Vienna Waltz, as the young man is approaching a ballroom to dance a young lady who has asked him for a date. Sadly, he finds his suitor is with another man and has no choice but to walk away dejectedly.

-[II - "Lonely Wandering" in G, Tempo 56]-
Feelings of betrayel and frustration are not unexpected for such a moment. Sitting alone outside, he realizes he's been mislead for quite some time by a woman he thought genuinely cared about him.

-[III - "The Ballroom Dance" in G, Tempo 102]-
His sulking is interrupted by the approach of a lifelong friend who perhaps knows him better than he knows himself. Taking him by the hand, she leads him back into the ball room for the final dance of the evening. As with the first movement, this is a Waltz, though far brisker and far more light harted!

-[IV - "A Table by the Window" in Eb, Db, C, Tempo 88]-
As the sun slowly sets, he and his dear friend sit alone at the table of a bistro, having tea and sandwich as speak of growing up together. They both realize in their adulthood that looking for the perfect love at first sight has been a fruitless endeavor, and that perhaps, just perhaps they know what each other needs all too well.

V - "Finale" (March) in G, C, Tempo 144
Dinner has been followed by an evening at the local pub. The happy couple join a crowd of friends and share a humble pint of mead to the sounds of laughter. Doubtless there will be many such evenings. Many such outings... and all the time in the world to have it in.

Comments

The melody structure is nice with the overview.
Since I like the work, let me do some constructive criticism. Because it can be improved.

  1. Instead of constantly dictating the to the rhythm, you should let them (listeners) create on their minds.
  2. In the bass part: you'd better try not to make a chord below the B (on the fourth line from the top). // although fourth and fifth intervals are acceptable, you should avoid thirds and below.
  3. Due to the above (and following) reasons: as it stands: it seems to be a Harpsichord play rather than a Pianoforte piece.
  4. You can choose a wider range to use the sound coloring and features of the Piano. (think: Chopin)
  5. You must create rhythmic space for each part: in the accompaniment and in the melody.
  6. It may be better to use pedals and dynamics a little more. (and grace notes, mordents (turns).

Below: I added an example based on the 1st part of your work. (from my point of view)
