Adding a hyphen that isn't meant to separate syllables

The text I'm currently working from has a hyphen in part of it to separate parts of a sentence, and I want to remain as true to the original text as possible. Is there a way to type a hyphen so that it remains a hyphen and doesn't attempt to separate syllables as it usually does?
