I use a MacBook Pro and the sound works just fine. In fact, when trying to listen to my tune I'm able to hear the metronome if I enable it. I just updated from the previous version to the latest Musescore version. I've reset it to factory settings a few times, downloaded it several times and installed again but there's still no playback sound.
I have homework to do using Musescore so I really need this to work for me. Thanks.
If you are on a MacBook Pro, then this is not the same issue - the OP here is describing some sort of issue with Windows 8.1. For a discussion of some issues that a few Mac users have encountered, see instead #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty
Should be fixed in cae320e (master) and 596f6c2 (2.2). See https://musescore.org/en/node/234811
