three notes joined by a slur
I am trying to write a three note group [quavers] to be played in the time of two but I cannot work out how to join the notes. I get 2 joined and one separate.

Use tuplets. See https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tuplets. The slurs are probably round versions of the square brackets you see in MuseScore rather than slurs.
