Because you don't always want or need one. Perhaps the palette shouldn't show them, but it does make it a little more clear what is being depicted.

It may be time to rethink this. In percussion the slur is the exception, though not unheard of. In classical music slurs are used almost all of the time though not universally. I'm not so sure about other genres. I remember usually seeing slurs when I played Jazz 40 years ago.

Still, it's easy enough to add them separately. I'm not generally a fan of having a single palette element adding two distinct elements to the score, it seems inconsistent on top of not always being desirable. It's possible, but I'm not really convinced it's the right thing.

Funny you should mention percussion, because I'm using it for flams. I've never seen a flam notated without a slur, so I didn't realize the slur wasn't just automatic for grace notes.
