Let midi input use instrument of selected note, not staff

I've started using a midi keyboard to help compose, allowing me to try out the music before I notate it. However, it's annoying when I'm inputting notes, then want to stop so I can play on the keyboard, and the sound used is of the instrument at the top of the page instead of the instrument I was just notating. I'd really like to see it changed.
