moving dynamic markings
How can I put dynamic markings (f, pp, etc.) and hair-pins ABOVE the line (system) instead of below it, where it always goes by default? The "move" squares only work below the line.

Assuming version 3.x. Select all of the items you want to move above the staff and change the position in the inspector (F8) to above.
I suggest that you read https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/selection-modes for information on possibilities of selecting only the items you want moved. If you have trouble still, attach your score and tell us what you want moved.
Or just press "X" to flip a dynamic or pretty much any other element from below to above or vice versa. I guess you are probably working with vocal music or you probvably wouldn't want to be moving them. If the music is purely vocal, so you want them all above, you can hit the "Set as style" button (labeled "S") in the Inspector next to the "Placement" to make that be the default.
