MS 3.2.3 occasionally crashes when F9 (Palette menu) is closed while in playback mode
MS 3.2.3, Windows 10
The attached score is for reference only, the crash has occurred on many of my 3.2.3 scores.
In MS 2.3.2, I could close the Palette menu while playback was occurring with no issues, but in 3.2.3 it causes MS to crash maybe 1 in 10 or 20 times. When the crash occurs, the normal crash pop-up window appears, asking if I want to send a crash report.

Did you send a crash report?
No crash here.

The score crashed just a moment ago, this time I did the automated crash report.
Order of events- Palette (F9) and Inspector (F8) were both open. The score was playing at about measure 34 of the attached. I pressed F9 to close the palette (to view more of the score) and the crash occurred, and the window appeared asking if I wished to file a crash report, which I did.
The work flow at the time was, play a short section of the score, add a new invisible tempo marking or fermata to mimic a real performance, play it back again, continue.
After the crash, re-started MS, it asked if I wished to resume from the crash, I said yes, and noted that all my most recent tweaks were there even though I hadn't saved them before the crash. A very pleasant result.

Out of curiosity, did you include the link to this discussion in your crash report? I'll make it easier for someone to see this context. I normally copy the link from my browser and paste it into the crash report along with a note like See: musescore.../node/######

No I didn't. Sorry, didn't even know that was a thing that I could do.

The white window allows you to describe the circumstances of the crash. I haven't seen one of the crash reports, but I expect info that allows a programmer to know what led to the crash might help.

I described the crash details in the window, but didn’t copy the link to this issue. Do you know how to access the crash report? I would have thought it was associated with the Issue Tracker, but don’t see any connection from there.

No, there is (unfortunatly) no association between the crash report(er) and the issue tracker. The only possible association is to put a link into the creash report

Do you think it would be appropriate if I put in a feature request that the Crash Report info window have some guidance added, such as posting a link as discussed, or any other relevant info? I don’t know what data it already includes; for instance does it already include metadata about MS version and operating system?

It does have the infos about OS and MuseScore version

I could still do a recommendation to copy a link to any relevant open issue or thread. Make sense?

FWIW, I am thrilled that it somehow recovered with my last set of edits, even I hadnt done a “save”.

Crashed again when pressing F9 to close the Palette menu, although in this instance audio playback was not happening.

I regularly get a crash after editing a score and then pressing F8 and F9 to close Inspector and Palettes. Almost every time this happens, I send a detailed feedback with the crash reporter. It has been a problem for some months...

Still a frequent problem with MS 3.3.4. Happens to me several times a week. I don't always file a crash report; I would hope at this point there is no more data acquisition that would help.

Yes, still a problem. And I am still sending crash reports... ;-)

Same here, I always save before I hit F9… F8 so far hasn’t insulted me.

Having experienced the crash numerous times, I can reliably add one other data point- the crash only happens when audio playback of the score has been used to a significant extent. I’ve never had the crash after making edits with no playback, or with only a few seconds of playback in that work session.
I’ve never had the crash from pressing F8, I’ve only mentioned it because my normal work flow is to have the Inspector and Palettes both open, and to press F8 then F9 when closing the work session or taking a pause. Perhaps I will try F9 first, then F8, and see if it makes a difference.
Perhaps relevant, I have the MuseScore General HQ soundfont installed, but not the drumline soundfont.

According to my guess, they disabled the closing icon (x) of the palette menu for this reason (crash) during playback but didn't change the function of the corresponding shortcut. However, the Inspector's closing icon is functional at this stage.

" I have the MuseScore General HQ soundfont installed, but not the drumline soundfont"
Same for me.
"the crash only happens when audio playback of the score has been used to a significant extent"
Interesting. Most of my work involves reviewing and correcting transcriptions, and I always include a listening test to spot wrong notes.
"F9 first, then F8"
This is not my usual pattern. I always use F8 first then F9, to get the Inspector out of the way first. And this often causes a crash.
In reply to Having experienced the crash… by marty strasinger
AFAICT using F8 or not does not make any difference, it just happens on F9.
To the playback thing: “perhaps”, not sure but might be.
The crash doesn’t happen always, just often enough to be annoying.
