Alternating Stem Directions - Same Voice

• Aug 27, 2019 - 13:13

The first of the two attached images is of a single string instrument playing 4 16th notes. Notice the alternating stem directions for ever other note. This tells the string player not to play the same note in the same position but to find a different location on the instrument to play the same note and switch back a forth between the 2 locations to play the same note.

I'd like to have the score I am creating look the same way. Playback is inconsequential. It's the look that matters. I can't seem to find how to do this without creating a separate voice and hiding the rests needed to create such a look. (See second image.) The problem with this is that the notes created with the downward stems have stems that are too long and out of proportion with the stems of the stems pointing in the upward direction.

1) Is there a way to create the look of the first image in MuseScore without using the 2-voice method?
2) If there isn't a way to avoid this, is there a way to shorten the stem length in the second voice?

You can move all of the 16th note rests in voice 2 up the same amount by moving them using the y offset in the inspector. To select all of the voice 2 16th notes select a section of music (or don't select anything to affect the entire score). right click a 16th rest in voice 2 and choose select>more... In the window that pops up choose 16th rest, in the same voice and in selection (if applicable). When you click OK, you can change the y offset in the inspector (F8) to -2 and the stems should be acceptable. You can also make them all invisible at once by making sure there is no check in visible. You will need to check it then uncheck it if you already have some of the rests invisible and some visible.
