Cannot enter an 1/8 and 1/2 notes starting at the same time.

While I can enter e.g. a chord of three 1/8 notes starting at the same time, if I first enter an 1/8 note and then a 1/2 note to start at the same time, it moves the 1/2 note to the left to play before the 1/8 note and NOT at the same time.
Basically as long as the value of all notes are the same, they will show to start at the same time, but when the notes are of different value, it will not let me start them at the same time.
I'm a brand new user, so what am I missing?
Also is there a hot-key to turn the "Note Input" on and off?
