Adjusting Measures
I have 8 8th notes in the first measure of a score. How do I move the first 4 notes into a pickup measure and make the measures readjust starting with the 5th note in the existing first measure.

Copy the 2nd half, paste into the next measure, right click into 1st, measure properties, change actual duration and tick "exclude from measure count"

Thank you for the quick response. That doesn't work, I guess, because the next measure and the next and next, etc. already have their allocated 4 counts. See attached. Maybe I didn't ask the question correctly. I need those first 3 notes to be pickups.

Then right click on the first measure and change 'Actual' measure duration.

Thank you so much. I think that worked.

Now I need to change this so all the 8th notes are quarter notes, etc. Can that be done globally? How is the easiest way to do that?

Also, please start a new thread with any new topics that do not relate to your original request concerning adjusting measures for pickup notes.
This way the various topics do not get all jumbled up on a single thread (for others who are searching for similar answers).

Thank you. I will do that.

I don't know whether to start a new thread now or just reply to this existing one since we already started the conversation. But I must not be doing the system break right. I edited the whole composition by splitting each measure and thought I could then tell each 8th note to change to a quarter note, but it still recognizes both parts of each split measure as one measure, so it doesn't work.
Let me know if you want me to start a new thread.
Thank you.

If you are asking about changing all 8th notes to quarter notes please start a new thread/topic.
Also attach a copy (or a snippet of) your score, explaining which measures you wish to change, and what you are doing to produce the intended result.
(I don't understand why you are concerned with system breaks and splitting measures.)
So, start a brand new thread/topic and this discussion can expand further over there, without confusing any (future) readers of this thread.

Best to start a new thread and attach the score as it stands and explain the issue in more detail. Not sure what you mean by "splitting each measure" - that shouldn't have been needed at all and probably caused whatever problem you are seeing

Can you help me with something else. Why do the fermatas in the attached not go where they belong, under the notes, and smaller of course?
In reply to Can you help me with… by terilctlc
Fermatas are preferably placed above the notes, although you can click on a fermata then type the letter 'X' to toggle the fermata above/below the staff (or change the "Placement' in the Inspector). If two parts share a staff, one part can display a fermata above; the other, below.
If you place a system break at measure 4, the staff will allow more room for each fermata so they won't "stack" on top of each other.
See:
https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/breaks-and-spacers#breaks
and read about 'System break'.
If you want the fermata smaller, try a different musical symbols font:
Use menu item: Format -> Style and then in 'Score' change the 'Musical symbols font' to 'Bravura'.
