Lyrics best practices

What would be the best way to add words like "chorus" or "refrain" or verse numbers to the lyrics line without having it act like part of the word? Or is there a better way to do this? In the instance where, say, verse one starts with a pick-up note, and verse two does not, is it possible to have the numerals line up vertically independent of the lyrics?
