How to permanently change tempo
Some of my scores have the wrong tempo - too fast. I can change this by going to View > Panel but this only lasts for that playing of the tune. The next time I play it I have to change it again. How can I save the new tempo?

The Play Panel is temporary. To make a permanent change you need to selct the first measure of the score then go to the Tempo palette and double-click on a tempo. You can then use Inspector to change the speed.

Palette items need only be single-clicked in recent versions of MuseScore.

Thanks for this. However, a friend has just let me know a really simple method. You highlight (click on) the tempo number icon in the top right-hand corner of the score, double click again and it will give you the facility of changing the figure to whatever you want e.g. from 90 to 72. Problem solved!

Tempo number icon?
That's most likely a tempo marking that the original creator of the score attached to the first measure and then dragged to the upper-right corner of the page.
A freshly created blank score won't have any such tempo markings and will play at the default tempo (120 BPM).
BTW, editing the text directly as you describe will work only if the tempo marking has the “Follow text” option checked in the Inspector (which it is by default).

In case a friend isn't handy, the handbook is ;-), see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/3/tempo#edit-tempo
