Chord with different note durations

I am a novice and probably describing my question poorly. As shown on the attached file (first two full measures), I am trying to enter a chord in which one of the notes is either a full or half note, and the other notes are quarter notes. Is there any way to do this? Ties of the full or half notes to notes in the next measure may further complicate my problem.
