double note values in early music
I am attempting to set up a score using a long as the basic unit of measure instead of a whole note. There does not seem to be a way to change the default setting of whole note for the measure. I don't want to hide barlines or use mensurstrich, I just want to establish the long (double-whole note) as the basic time unit per measure. Also, is it possible to double the note values of an existing score with a global command? Thanks.

so a time signature or 4/2, right?
And yes, doubling is possible, select,, cut (Ctrl+X), paste double (Ctrl+Shift+W)

Thanks for your quick and helpful response. Actually, I would prefer to use the original symbol for tempus imperfectum diminutum, or the C with a slash, for the time signature. I realize this is what is knows as "cut time" in modern notation but the symbol was widely used in historical notation as well. Is this possible?
Also, while I have your attention, does MuseScore have the capability to notate Gregorian chant? Thanks.

First use a 4/2 time sig, then change that to display a C with slash via right-click onto the time sig > time sig properties.
Greogorian chant, using neumes? I don't think so

Ah, yes, I forgot about #282246: "Other" appearance in Time Signature Properties does not work

Using the 4/2 time signature, I can now use longer time values but it seems I can't change that to C-slash at this point. Apparently, using the 4/2 time signature precludes tying notes across the barline, and the tie changes the note value to a dotted note with a hidden note across the barline. Is this a new feature/problem? I just updated to the most recent version of MuseScore, and in the earlier version, the ties across barlines worked according to the manual.

I don't understand what you mean here, guess a sample score should help

OK. I am including a score with only the superius line notated so far. At the end of the second measure, I would like to tie the half-note Bb across the barline, as well as the whole note A at the end of the fourth measure. When I select the note and click the tie function, the first of the tied notes changes to the value as if there was no bar line and eliminates the second of the tied notes. It's probably something simple that I have not yet discovered. Thanks.

That's a backup version of the score

And what I see that it is now 4/2

Indeed, because you have checked the experimental feature "Display note value across measure boundaries"
in Format -> Style -> Score.
When unchecked: Crecquillon_Toutes les nuictz(1).mscz

It should not. But we had several cases in the past couple weeks where this was set.

A minor problem that was easily remedied. I very much appreciate your attention and your work overall. Thank you.
