Brackets on Single-line Parts

I'm trying to put a bracket on two single-line percussion parts, but when I have selected them and double-click the bracket sign, no bracket appears, although the score is shifted a little to the right on the page as it usually would to make room for a bracket if one were there. Is this intentional, and if not, how do I make it work?
