ms4 note length on midi keyboard

I'm using a MIDI keyboard and when I'm playing without notating on the score the notes only last about a second. Doesn't matter if I'm holding it down for 0.1 or 10 seconds, it lasts the same length. Can't hold down other notes while I'm playing other notes like if I'm playing chords on one hand and melody on the other, the sound will just be cut off. Musescore 3 could do all this. Is it meant to be like this or am I missing something?
