Problem with cross notehead

Is anyone else having this problem? When I use the "cross" notehead to specify a spoken note, the duration is way off - it's held for many beats even if it's an eighth note.

I've tried starting a new project and it's always the same problem.

I don't know any other way to specify that a note be spoken instead of sung.
