Crackling sound when putting in notes and on replay
I am new to notating a score. I jumped in anyway! It's been fun. However, I have been experiencing issues from the get-go with crackling at input of notes, and both stumbling and crackling notes upon replay. Also the file keeps telling me it's corrupt when reopening a saved file.
We did a whole system check on my computer and included a virus and Malware check. Looks good on my side of things. I do not know why my files are now corrupt, but would really like to know.
I was asked to provide and example of a problem I've been experiencing with my scores. I have crackling with input of each note into the score, and corruption of the score afterwards upon opening: followed by crashing shortly after beginning to play the score. What's up?
I created a Test Score today to present. I hope it opens. It's a Hot Mess...not very interesting. But it was created just as an example of the issues I am having.
Thank you to anyone who might be able to assist. Test Score for Crackling Noise.mscz

Also De-fraged my Computer today before creating the new listed Test Score presented here this evening. It still crashed, stuttered, stumbled, and crackled upon playback. Frustrating. Hope this can be fixed. I'd rather it be something I am doing wrong, or my ignorance in using MuseScore 4.0...then someone might be able to direct me how to fix or repair damage done to my scores. Fingers crossed.
I came here with the exact same issue.
I now resort to compose in musescore 3, then export the audio with musescore 4 because of the quality. The big issue after the crackling sound is that, now that all of my scores (previous and new) have been saved through musescore 4, I cannot open them with musescore 3 nor can I even copy and paste. I have to resort to xml file which makes me lose some audio and text quality.

I am sorry for the frustration you are experiencing.
I started with MuseScore3 just a few days before downloading MS4. I took transferred a music file from MS3 to MS4. The score sounded great in MS3 and had little crackles upon opening in MS4. I don't know if there is any correlation there or not...
I am hoping someone with more knowledge than I, about these issues, has a/some suggestions as how to fix this issue.
I will still use MS3 and MS4 but will only save them to my Desktop. The scores saved there are not corrupted upon opening again in MS4: again, I have no idea why that would make a difference.
Keep creating beautiful music.

God bless all the Code Writers of Musescore: their endeavor is such a gift to others.

I am sorry as well for what you are going through. Someone suggested installing an audio interface. I will do some research, and see what I can find. Please, if you find something helpful, let me know.
Thank you.

Nope! No correlation, MS4 is just horribly optimized
As for the score issue, you can CTRL/CMD+C and CTRL/CMD+V the music from /documents/MuseScore3/Scores into /documents/MuseScore4/Scores
since they are copies, you can use the MS3 versions in MS3, and MS4 versions
make sure to copy any new scores from MS3 into the MS4 folder.
Happy composing!

I would suggest that in the future, you should not open MS3 files in MS4 directly from your MS3 scores folder. Instead copy MS3 scores to a different folder ( maybe the MS4 scores folder) and open them from there.
For MS4 playback problems try the settings here: https://musescore.org/en/node/339915

Thank you for taking time out of your day to reply with such good advice. After following your advice, for awhile, the issues lessened for about two weeks, but then started again: crackling with note input.
I have noticed that each time the crackling happens with note entry, upon playback, MuseScore 4.0 crashes.
I texted just to thank you for giving a bit of your time with this problem.

Wait, can you show a picture of your I/O musescore settings?

Please raise the buffer to 4096 as was suggested in the How To. Also, the image indicates that you are using speakers. If you are using headphones instead, you probably should change that setting, too. And having the Mixer open helps.

Again, I thank you for your time.
I have the mixer open at all times. I will change the settings suggested for speakers and headphones, and raise the buffer to 4096.
Nice reply.

I think too, I need to take the offered online course Mastering MuseScore...and several others to do more than write Lullabies for Grandchildren.
Thank you.
