I'm so afraid to install MU4 using the MuseHub. Is it really so dangerous?
I don't want it to mess with my MU3.6.

Before installing MS4, make a backup copy of your MS3 scores folder. Once you install MS4, all mscz files on your computer will have the MS4 icon. But you can still open MS3 files with MS3. But you have to right click and choose open with MS3. I would first copy any MS3 files that I want to open in MS4 to the MS4 scores folder and open them from there. You can open an MS4 file in MS3, you must export from MS4 as mxl, then right click (just to make sure) the mxl and open with MS3.

Ok. So all I would have to do is change the file registration back to MU3 if I don't want to use MU4 as my primary Program...

I have no idea about how to change file registration. Any mscz file will have the MS4 icon. Any mxl file you save from MS3, will have the MS3 icon. But even if you open the mxl then save it from MS3, the resulting mscz file will still have the MS4 icon. The new difference seems to be that a double clik on an mscz file will open MS4. To open an MS3 mscz requires a right click.

In windows you can right click a file, select open with, select MU3 and save that.

I missed that check box. Good to know. Thanks. However that changes all mscz files (even MS4) to open in MS3. And those created in MS4 will not open in MS3. So it just depends on what is most important.

Yeah, true.

Installing MuseScore 4 via the Msue Hub versus installing it directly makes no difference whatsoever except to how further bug fix updates happen - if you use the Muse Hub installation, they can potentially be completely automatic, whereas with the standard installation, you'd have the click a button run the updater manually upon being prompted. Aside from that one button click difference in the update process, there should be no difference whatsoever to the actual experience of using MuseScore 4. It's the exact same program either way.
Muse Hub is not MuseScore - it's the installer program for MuseScore. MuseScore 4 itself can absolutely option older files in general, although it's certainly possible one of your specific files is corrupt or has some other issues that causes a problem. If you have a specific file you are having trouble opening, please you attach it here so we can investigate.
