Bar Length
I have bars which which have stretched themselves out, one to a page width even though it's only 4 quavers and 2 crotchets. How can I compress them?

You probably have a section break in an inappropriate place. If you need further help, attach the score (.mscz file) so that someone can see what is going on.

I found the section marks, selected and deleted them, the bars then shrank to a sensible size.

Actually, I should have written system break. But you seem to have managed to fix your score any way.
