notating 5:2 phrase
I am trying to notate a 5:2 polyrhythm, but MuseScrore is notating it as a 5:4 phrase when I select Notes -> Tuplet -> Quintuplet (see Example 1 on the attached .jpg image). The notation itself is correct, but the 5:4 relation should be a 5:2 relation.
If I instead select the phrase and go to Notes -> Tuplets -> Other and manually enter a 5:2 relation, I get incorrect notation (see Example 2 on the attached .jpg image).
How do I label the polyrhythm in Example 1 with a 5:2 relation?
I am using MuseScore v.1.3 revision 5702; windows 7

These relations are correct, 5 eighth notes in the space of 4 and 5 quarter notes in the space of 2

Jojo-Schmitz, thank you for your reply.
If, in the case of the 5:2 phrase in my previously attached example, we look at the underlying math, we should have beats 3 & 4 each made up of a quintuplet comprised of 16th notes. We would then play every 2nd beat. And we could reduce that to 8th's. So shouldn't the quarter notes in my 5:2 example (Example 2) actually be eighths?

You are misunderstanding the ratio.
5:2 doesn't mean 5 xx in the space of 2 beats.
5:2 means 4 notes in the space of 2, depending on which time value you have selected.
So if you have a quaver selected you will get 5 quavers in the space of 1 crotchet.
If you have a crotchet selected you will get 5 crotchets in the space of 1 minim.
In your case you want 5 quavers in the space of 4 ie 5 quavers in the space of 2 crotchets or one minim.

ChurchOrganist, your explanation isn't 100% clear to me. Do you have recommended reading so that I can better understand these types of relationships? I thought I understood it, but apparently not.

5 of whatever in the space usually occupied be 4 (or 2) of whatever, this is the ratio.
Your 'whatever' seems to be eighth (or quaver in UK). Clear as mud?

It makes sense to see 5 quarter notes "stuffed" into the space that is normally allotted to 4, but I'm not seeing how to stuff those same 5 quarter notes into the space of only 2... Seems that the quarter notes would have to become 1/8th's. Since both of you are saying that MuseScore is notating correctly, then my issue is with my brain, not with the software. Thanks for helping.

Have you watched my tutorial video on the subject?

A link to this video should be included in the user guide, it clarified everything. Thanks!

Happened a long time ago, check http://musescore.org/en/handbook/tuplet, down at the bottom you'll find the links

sadly, in my pdf version of the user guide that I downloaded, these are non-working links. I wasn't aware of the online version handbook...

Ah, yes and old and known issue with mixed case hyperlinks in the PDF manual

I think I need a better understanding of notating tuplets, beyond just how to use musescore. Is there a forum on this site for users to discuss how to count and write abnormal rhythms? Or is there someone you can recommend that I could ask for help, even if paying a fee is involved?
